The undisputed master of artistic synergy, artist Ragnar Kjartansson. In his performative practice he draws on the entire arc of art. The history of film, music, theatre, visual culture and literature find their way into his video installations, durational performances, drawing and painting. Pretending and staging become key tools in the artist’s attempt to convey sincere emotion and offer a genuine experience to the audience.
Ragnar Kjartansson’s work has been exhibited widely. Recent solo exhibitions and performances have been held at the New Museum, ICA Boston, Museo Guggenheim Bilbao, Carnegie Museum of Art and MoMA PS1. In 2009, Kjartansson represented Iceland at the Venice Biennale and in 2013 his work was featured at the Biennale’s main exhibition. In 2011, he was the recipient of Performa’s 2011 Malcolm McLaren Award for his performance ‘Bliss’.
Current exhibitions on show by Ragnar Kjartansson include: “Bjarni Bömmer hlustar á Take it Easy með Eagles” at Skúrinn, Reykjavík (performance November 1-2), “A Lot of Sorrow” at Luhring Augustine, New York, “The Visitors” at Artes Mundi, Cardiff and “S.S. Hangover” at Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.
At YAIC Ragnar will talk about synergy, collaborations and the artistic process behind the making of a work of art. The title of his talk is “Love, respect and collaboration”.
